Meet Emmy Claire, 12, from Carlsbad, California and she trains at Evoke Dance Movement.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I started dance when I was two.  My mom took me to a ballet/tap combo class and I stood with my finger in my mouth just watching but not participating in the class.  Until the teacher brought out the carpet squares and had us jump over them and run to the other side of the room.  I was into that and started to have fun. Three years later I auditioned for the competitive team and was one of the youngest dancers and I haven't stopped since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

No, I wouldn't say things have been easy, because I have to work really hard for everything I have or have accomplished.  However, I know how lucky I am to have a supportive family that allows me to chase my dreams. I work really hard in technique, flexibility, endurance and I often miss out on family, school and friends' events.

What personal limitations if any did you go through in your young career?

I don't think I have any personal limitations.

Has anybody ever tried to limit you on what you could do? If so how did you fight it?

Yes, it really hurt to be told I was not good enough to be a contemporary dancer when I was 7 or 8.  I moved to a new studio, auditioned for and got a contemporary solo called "What a Feeling," and had an incredible season, including titles, overalls, and 3rd runner-up national Velocity Mini MVA.

How do you conquer negative talk?

I change negative self-talk and I make myself say positive affirmations over and over.  When other people talk negative about me, I use it to motivate me more.

What is your favorite quote?

Turn your can'ts into cans and dreams into plans.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?

Yes! My big, exciting news is that I just made Hollywood Vibe top 3 National Dancer of the Year AND they just announced their company and I am beyond grateful to be on Vibe Company for my 3rd year. This is the great news I've been waiting for and I am feeling very happy, proud and blessed right now.  Our Evoke Dance Movement auditions are coming up and I'm looking forward to my fifth season there. I plan to keep training and working really hard no matter what this new season looks like.
