How to Get the Most Out of Your Summer Intensive
1. Listen to Your Body
Summer intensives often require an itinerary that is far more demanding than your typical dance schedule. With days that can be over eight hours long, it is important to listen to your body. Make sure that you are hydrating and eating nutrients that will help to fuel your body for optimal performance. After classes, take time to stretch and relax. At the first sign of injury, let your teacher know.
Insider Tip: Many programs have a physical therapist or medical personnel to help diagnosis and treat injuries.
2. Have a Goal
While accomplishing a summer intensive is a great goal to accomplish in itself, having an overall/weekly goal will help you stay motivated and focused.
Can’t think of a goal?
Have a goal of getting a critique from at least one teacher. A critique is one of the highest compliments a teacher can give, as it shows that they recognize your hard work and potential.
3. Trust Your Teachers
Most summer intensives begin with a week in which students may be switched from one level to the next. This week can be both stressful and confusing for students. However, this is a time that you should trust that your teachers are placing you where you will grow the most.
4. Record Everything
Keep a notebook and a pen handy with you for taking notes after class. From writing down corrections to recording combinations, part of your job while attending a summer intensive is to soak up every detail. With today’s technology you can videotape combinations and choreography to help you practice.
Insider tip: If you are thinking about posting choreography on social media, check with the choreographer first and give credit where credit is due.
5. Be Confident
Attending a summer intensive can be intimidating. Wherever you dance there will always be that one student with amazing feet or gorgeous turns. It is easy to question your own abilities. Don’t worry, and remember that you were chosen to attend the intensive for your own unique and beautiful abilities. Be confident and show why you deserve to be there.
6. Embrace Every Moment
From experiencing living away from home to learning new styles of dance, embrace every moment and jump into every opportunity that is presented. Take time to meet new friends and explore the new city. Be bold and stretch your limits.
