Making Your Social Media Presentable

Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc… we all have some form of social media. It is a great way to stay connected with friends and to network with others. Additionally, it means that anonymity no longer exists. Many employers, universities, and programs use social media to screen their applicants. For this reason, it is important to make your social media presentable. Here are MTD’s top tips on creating a positive social media profile.

Tip #1: Not So Temporary

SnapChat and other apps allow users to post videos and photos for a set period of time and after the set duration the photo is “erased.” While this temporary setting allows you to share information without it being permanently on your feed, it is important to remember that it is not always temporary. Screen-shots and other features allow this information to be saved even sometimes without your knowledge. This information could appear later and potentially harm your career or acceptance in a program. For this reason, it is extremely important to only post material that is representative of your best self.

Tip #2: Delete Fake Accounts

Yeah, Finsta (aka Fake Instagram) can be a lot of fun and a way you can share silly photos with friends. However, finstas can be a red flag for employers as it indicates a “second life” or “another side” to a person. Deleting your finsta will help improve your social media appearance. Even if you think no one will find it, chances are it will eventually be discovered.

Tip #3: Clean Your Accounts

You know that picture you posted a long time ago? Or that old account you forgot your password to? It is important to close down any old accounts and get rid of any photos that don’t display who you are. Definitely keep some old pictures, but erase those that you forgot you even took. Having a neat social media appearance signals to employers that you are organized and it also helps them research you more.

Tip #4: Be Positive and True

Your social media is a projection of yourself. For this reason, it is important that it represents who you are and who you hope to become. This means getting rid of poorly worded comments or captions and only liking posts that are appropriate. Following friends and role models who inspire you. And posting material that highlights you in the best possible ways.

Tip #5: Uniformity is Key

If you are applying to a program or job having uniform accounts makes it easy for employers to find you. This means having identical profile pictures for all of your social media accounts. Also, it means having your name on your accounts appear exactly as it appears on applications. Insider tip: make your username have your full name in it such as _firstname.lastname_. This will make you easy to find.
